Bree Orlock Designs: Tribal Demon Mask
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 04/16/2013 06:04:44

This is a fine and imposing - and perhaps scary! - tribal mask, in possibly African style but perhaps mid/south American, that might hang on an explorer's study wall... or suddenly appear in front of you during a jungle stroll.

It's clear and crisp, angular, and looks good, whether you choose the colour version or the greyscale one that is included in the download. A striking image, use it to effect in the course of a game, or to illustrate your latest pulp or cod-archaeology epic!

Emily Vitori Designs: Ladies Face 1
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 04/15/2013 04:55:03

A rather charming line-art sketch of a young lady - timeless enough for her to feature in fantasy or far future games... perhaps a character portrait, or someone the characters chance to meet.

The terms of the enclosed licence permit private or commercial use provided that the artist is credited and that it's not used in any art collection or in a work in which it forms more than 25% of the whole: quite fair but, and this is a big but, these terms should be displayed in advertising material not only after you have decided to purchase the picture. OK, so you are only $4 out of pocket if you wanted to do something different and now on reading the terms decide that you cannot. UK law - it's where I live and under which I operate - has in the past come down heavily on licence terms only made available after purchase. Just as well these are fair terms and unlikely to be challenged!

Oh, and it's a nice picture. I did say that, didn't I? Being an old female I don't often play young ones these days, but I do have fun with female NPCs and she'll come in handy when I need to illustrate one.

Dark Aeons: The Atlantean Chronicles
by Matt W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/17/2013 14:53:24

Disclosure: I was provided a copy of the book by Stardust and asked if I would like to write a review.

When I read through Dark Aeons, I kept going back to a feeling of overload. Pitched to me as a fun diceless Eldritch Horror type game, it does include that, but the problem is this book keeps adding layers and layers to the premise until you cannot see the bottom.

There are ancient civilizations, ancient Atlantis, and secret conspiracies of sorcerors? Great!

But then there are also no less than four different flavors of vampire, all with their own internal politics and factions. OK.

And it's set in an alternative timeline that features megacorporations, Shadowrun style cyberspace and virtual reality, and a post-nuclear terrorism America.

Oh, and there are mutants, psychics, and alchemically created immortal warriors. Got that?

And then we go back to talk about the history of all the different Atlantean and post-Atlantean houses and families.

By the time I was 40 pages in, my head was spinning, and when I finally reached character creation, I felt like I needed Cliffs notes to keep track of everything, and I would run into mentions of a corporation, house, society, or faction that frequently made me flip back to try and figure out who was related to what.

I realize that Stardust is an independent publisher, and as I mentioned, there are a lot of fun ideas in here. I think this is simply a case of trying to jam too many concepts into one core book. I also appreciate that they include rules for tabletop, LARP, and even converting the playing card based "Center Stage" mechanics to use dice for those who are more comfortable with rolling for challenges instead of taking draws.

If you're a GM considering this system, I think it's worth looking the book over, but perhaps consider taking pieces of the setting rather than trying to swallow the entire thing in one bite. Using the rules and some of the historical information in the book, a campaign pitting agents of the hidden Atlantean empire against, say, explorers sponsored by a dark sorcerer who are trying to unearth Abyssal ruins from the Antarctic could be very fun. You could take the virtual reality environment and run a great "Cthulutech"-esque mashup of eldritch horror, too.

I'd treat DA as a toolbox. Pull the elements you want out, make good use of them, and don't worry about overcomplicating things for the players.

Creator Reply:
At the time that Dark Aeons was being produced, we as a company were not certain if we had the funds to get out any supplemental core books for the game, so the decision was made to take all of the materials that we had on hand and put them into one core book rather than a bunch of splat books. The primary protagonists of Dark Aeons: The Atlantean Chronicles are the descendants of the survivors of Atlantis, everything else are add on options to the setting world.

This game system is designed for those who love to roleplay, but do something more than just roll dice all night long. The mechanics are simple, and the options for building are endless. If you need a break from your traditional campaigns and roleplaying games, this is the one. Spend the money, support small press and play a system that will make you think creatively and you will never run out of things to do.

Suitable, perhaps, for a prog rock album cover... a reflection of the state of my own head at times (no comments, please, about what I've been smoking - I'm a Mormon!)...

Reminiscent of the one art exam I did, back at school. The teacher hated it, but the exam board's opinion differed.

When you need a really STRANGE illustration for an NPC, or are exploring the wierdest corners of your alternate reality, this might just be the image you need to sum it all up on the cover.

Nice 70s vibe image. reminds me of the art you might have seen in the old DAW book for cover art. Pure Sword 7 Sorcery goodness here. I plan to use it multiple times in different projects.

Bree Orlock Designs: Rocker Girl
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 04/14/2012 11:59:02

A striking young lady glares out the page at you, challenge and defiance personified...

Somewhere between Art Deco and cartoon in style, it's an illustration that could grace an album cover or perhaps decorate the wall of a bar.

What's she doing? Where's her left shoulder? You decide. Is she maybe a chance-met NPC in your game, or perhaps someone's character? Probably modern, but you can picture her anywhere from fantasy to the far future.

It's a face to spawn many stories. Does it inspire your imagination?

It also makes me think of my daughter, especially as she prepares for her band's first gig!

Bree Orlock Designs: Cute Cthulhu 1
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/08/2012 08:46:16

Taking the night off from regular duties of turning mankind into drooling madmen, the Great Cthulhu has gone...

... fancy dress?

Somehow I cannot see the Unspeakable One trundling round to Hastur's house struggling to keep a straight face as he mouths 'Eat my shorts!' and wonders just what Bart might do if he had mouth-tentacles and wings.

But if you can, it's a rather fun little sketch to enliven your notebook.

Almost seeming to squirm on page or screen, this is an image to strike fear into the most courageous of investigators.

Is it coming to get you? Or will it stay safely on its page in that musty tome you unearthed... while the words written on the facing page insinuate themselves into your mind and send you mad?

If this illustrated a poster on the wall at your university, would you go and hear the band? Or attend the meeting of the 'study group' that none of the faculty has ever heard about?

Does it herald some unspeakable rite or is it the cute baby picture carried in a horrendous monster's wallet?

Be afraid, be very afraid....

Bree Orlock Designs: Dragon 1
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/08/2012 08:28:24

A stylised (rather than biological) dragon form, suitable to be logo or badge.... but of what?

Blazer badge of The Dragon Academy for Upper Class Offspring.

Regimental badge of the 2nd (Prince Arithon's Own) Dragon Cavalry.

Logo of Draco Interstellar Cruise Lines.

Symbol of the Calatin University Xenological Department's expedition to the mountainous regions of Wallender III, in search of the legendary creatures early colonists have reported.

Proud badge of the Dragons NFL franchise....

Armorial bearings of His Serene Grace the Landgrav of Upper Cwmscut.

Never mind where or when your game is set, you'll find a suitable use for this charming but versatile little beastie.

Bree Orlock Designs: Ankh 1
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/08/2012 08:11:38

Stark and simple: does this adorn a temple or is it the badge of a company of elite space marines?

The ankh shape is associated, in this reality, with the religions of Ancient Egypt, a symbol of life... but what does it mean in your alternate reality, the one shared by you and your fellows around the gaming table?

An ancient society, meeting in secret to manipulate the flow of events. Mark of a revered deity, or a reviled one. Or the badge of the galactic champions of the annual Rollerball contest?

Let your ideas flow, and once you have a good one, buy this artwork and plaster it all over your notes, your webpages or wherever your creativity is shared with your players.

Bree Orlock Designs: Sigil Wheel 2
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/08/2012 08:03:40

This is an interesting piece: to look at it is to start spawning ideas (which is, to be honest, why I like artwork, and Bree's artwork in particular!).

So, what could all those intriguing symbols mean? Do they adorn some alien university student's chest (or whatever part of the anatomy they find appropriate for displaying college allegiances)? Or was this copied down from the chalkboard in a Demonology 101 class? Do they represent the stages in some esoteric gnostic religion? Merchants' marks - perhaps the design for a stained glass window in a merchant venturers' hall or guildhall?

They sure look like they mean SOMETHING... when I figure it out, I'll write the adventure, and use this to illustrate it!

Some say artwork is just for publishers, but I don't agree. Any creative gamer can find inspiration and, if they like their files and notes to look good, they can use the illustration too.

D20 Rules Options, Second Edition
by David W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/22/2012 09:19:26

D20 Rules Options: Volume #1, Second Edition

I really cannot say anything good or bad about the 1st edition as I have never read it, but I will say that the second edition of this product is a nice little edition to the gaming material binder. Granted, as with any "rules options" books I do not personally jive well with or plan on using entirely everything in the book, but there were some tidbits that I'll definitely be holding into consideration with my future gaming sessions. There were two things in particular that I liked: Action points and the body damage system. The action points are kind of close to something that I have used myself in the past... luck points essentially, but I think the way that the action points are thought out and presented are more universal and effective than the luck point system that I used in the past. The second, the bodily damage system, reminds me a bit of the Friday Night Firefight format that was used in Cyberpunk 2013, a game that I've ironically been thinking a lot about lately. Another point of interest in this product for me was the gangrene rolls. Granted, I may end up tweaking this a bit more for my own house rules. Granted, they've put in a nice way of looking at the issues of gangrene in the game, it is just that I want to expand it to other serious issues.

There were other good points to the game, including the cold damage issues and such forth, but the above mentions were the most likely to be used by myself.

Goin' Postal
by David W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/21/2012 22:03:20

Goin' Postal- I've got to admit that when I saw this I immediately had mixed feelings... as a shameless fan of the PC game Postal 2 I found myself thinking "Oh how can a paper and dice game top THAT experience"... and then as a game designer myself of paper and dice games and a huge advocate for bringing the table top gaming feel back to fashion I couldn't help but to be intrigued. For the most part, I was quite pleased. The game is a nice strategic board game that does not take a whole lot of time to play out... something that is good for me, my wife, and my oldest stepdaughter during one of those winter storm power outages... we live out in the country so not seeing power in the winter for two or three days at a stretch is not uncommon.... and my stepdaughter has no interest in learning the intricate bits of role playing games so board games are a must... she will play them, especially if they are violent and have a "punk rock" feel to them. Goin' Postal definitely has that.

The game board is a bit bland in appearance, my greatest beef here, but otherwise the game is fairly solid.... and fun in a very "bet you didn't think THAT was going to be the gaming flavor for the evening" sort of way. Overall I have to give it 4 stars... not totally where it could be, perhaps, but certainly enough fun regardless.
