QADD: Quick And Dirty Dungeons Deluxe!
by Bob [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/04/2023 04:57:51

During the last few days I have soloed my way through two short adventures that are included in QADD: Quick And Dirty Dungeons Deluxe! (fantasy RPG system, 78 pages at DriveThruRPG). The first adventure is a solo one. I created a first level rogue (Janine) and put her through it. There were two combat encounters and some tests/saving throws. It is interesting that you gain experience for tests/saving throws whether it is a pass or fail. Janine did survive the adventure and made it to second level. To solo the GM adventure, I used the FlexTale Solo Adventuring Toolkit (613 pages). Janine recruited her friends, so she had five first level rogues join her. One of the good things about this system is that it is easy to handle large groups of characters. If you like the Tunnels and Trolls RPG system, you will like this too. This group of PCs went through five combat encounters and several tests/saving throws. They did gain information about the area by manhandling a captive goblin. All six PCs survived this second adventure. For loot, they found a silver candlestick and 600 gold pieces. So, I do recommend this fun game.

Yokai
by Richard [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/02/2023 18:12:54

There's a rules-lite RPG in here somewhere, but you're going to have to wade through a lot of florid prose to find it. Confusingly, the rules do not say what type of dice to roll for skill checks - there is a reference to rolling d100s but having to add together 2-digit numbers all the time seems a bit clunky. Also, the rules explain how a character's health is generated but not how damage is applied. This is pretty basic stuff even for a simple system and should be made clearer. On the positive side there is a lot of useful detail for a yokai-centred game and it's clear the author loves his subject. A little more attention to game mechanics would make Yokai a much better system.

Mirrors of Madness
by Bob [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/01/2023 03:39:46

Mirrors of Madness (15 pages, on sale at DriveThruRPG) is a solo journeying game. I did combine this with Masquerade Macabre (I love the tarot card chart). To five this game more “meat”, I created a first level cleric (Old-School Essentials). So, this was my first attempt and my character died on turn three. A succubus killed him with a draining kiss. What a way to go. For my second attempt, I used another first level cleric (Dungeon Crawl Classics).

Masquerade Macabre
by Bob [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/29/2023 18:28:39

Masquerade Macabre (26 pages, on sale at DriveThruRPG) is meant to be played as a party game. I did not play it that way. It comes with a tarot card chart, so I used this product as my solo engine and its theme for an adventure. The RPG system that I used was the D6xD6 RPG Core Book. I created six characters. The year is 1938 and the PCs are invited to a free dinner party.

Curse Of The Moon
by Ethan H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/17/2023 16:11:18

Curse of the Moon is a simple game that only requires a deck of cards and a way to journal, following the cards as prompts. Said prompts are broad, making it easy to play in different settings. Most of the PDF has entries that do well to inspire. Prompts at the end take 2 pages, making the game easier to run. Played twice, taking 1 hour each. A complaint I do have is that the game seems to suggest that the card values have meaning but poorly explains and the prompts don’t follow. Still fun.

Thanks for supporting QADD! The QADD versions aren't collected they were mostly.publishe individually. I published them that day because at the time I was envisioning QADD as a mix and match kind of system. I also wanted it to be inexpensive. You can find them on the Rare! publisher page by clicking on the QADD link near the tip. Would a collected edition be something of interest to everyone who plays QADD?

Urban Wizards of the Mystical Underground
by Sean P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/29/2022 20:42:01

This is a good game. However, it is strongly FKR (Free Kreigspiel Renaissance (or Revolution, if you prefer)). If you do not know what that is, please search the term and research its approach to RPGs. Otherwise, you might be disappointed.

As an FKR game, Urban Wizards of the Mystical Underground (UWMG) is better than many I've read. It uses a single d6 as the randomizer. There are no scores to beat, modifiers or skill bonuses. Players describe their characters and record "three descriptive words about what kind of character you’d like to be" that define their wizards. The player rolls the d6 and the GM uses the character's three words, background and details of the story to interpret the result. The six outcomes are: You’re screwed; Everything’s not fine; It’s worse that you expected; It’s better than you expected; Everything’s fine; You’re golden. Kinda vanilla FKR so far.

Urban Wizards of the Mystical Underground adds value to FKR in two ways: world suggestion and random character generation. If you read the blurb on this games page on DTRPG then you have the gist of the game world: wizards fighting in an unseen world. There may be another paragraph or two, but no details about the world, the unseen world or what lives in either. If you need more than that, you probably are not ready for this game. If you realize that "less is more" and think about the world suggestion, you can easily take it places. It could be cyberpunk, current day, middle ages, far future, Renaissance... You have to fill in the details. I could run UWMG in any of these, but I'd be responsible for all of the details. There are enough prompts to get me thinking, but nothing super-evocative. I don't find fault with this, but some would.

I really like the randommly generated wizards. All wizards in UWMG can use cantrips, "very mundane spells like lighting a candle, moving small objects like a glass or a book, or making a coin disappear." Characters get six spells. For each spell, a player rolls to determine: power ; focus; price; duration. Players name their spells. They roll to determine some character features: non-human; have a secret; standard of living. There are some open questions for players to define their characters, too.

Combining the world suggestions and random character generation is a super fun creative exercise. If you have any theater friends, play this game with them or anyone who can "get into a character's head." It will be a blast.

I think UWMG is a perfect game for first-timers. It takes a GM who realizes that 3-6 tomes of 350+ pages can be a hindrance to roleplaying. If you've read up on the FKR and want to create a world for wizards fighting in an unseen world, this is absolutely worth the $2. Buy it now.

LIfers - Rarr I'm A Pocket Game # 18
by Chad B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/18/2021 12:44:27

Picked this up on a whim during the Space sale and it's not bad for 37 cents.

It's a mini-book - one sheet of paper which folded makes 8 pages.

One page is the cover, two describe an interesting background setting and the remaining actually flesh out a decent RPG system.

The minigame wants to be a self-contained game, but IMHO these would work much better if the RPG framework was a mini-book all to itself and the setting was given more detail and room to breathe, including only scenario-specific equipment & rules.

Still, you could fill an afternoon with this, and possibly have it lead into something larger, but it's mostly an idea/setup that would be better used in some other system.

Blammo Bots - Rarr! I'm a Pocket Game #2
by Chad B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/18/2021 12:33:10

Decent amount of game here for the price.

Picked this up on a whim during the Space sale for 37 cents and I'm pleased with it.

As said in the description this one reminds me a lot of Xybots (I've got one in the garage!) where player(s) are taversing a maze filled with robots trying to kill them.

The GM has a map and only tells the player(s) what they can see from their perspective in it.

Fun for short sessions, and could easily be dropped into a larger SciFi game.

This is a fun little set of solo adventures that work great with first or 2nd edition of The Black Hack. The descriptions are invocative, and the writing is good. I like the balance too, survival is not guaranteed.
