Is the Universal book required to run the Fantasy, Cyberpunk and other genre books?

Thanks for your interest. No, each book is standalone.

Any chance this title ever sees a sale or "Deal of the Day"?

This seems like a game built on the Basic D&D rolls of open doors on a d6, hear noise on a d6, etc.

Hi, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but dice is plural, "die" is the singular...

Historically, dice is the plural of die, but in modern standard English, dice is both the singular and the plural: throw the dice could mean a reference to two or more dice, or to just one. In fact, the singular die (rather than dice) is increasingly uncommon.

I'm wondering how high characters can go in abilities when they gain experience? There doesn't seem to be a cap. It just says that 3 is the highest that a starting character can have in an ability. But character can clearly increase their abilities. I would be interested in having this question answered for skills as well. I'm more into gritty play, btw.

As written there isn't really a cap, so it would be possible to add three to an Ability by Level 11, but I don't see a problem with houseruling a cap (I'd say a cap of 5). Obviously a beginning character has a cap of 3 for an Ability and 2 for a Skill. For grittier games you can reduce Stunt Points, although abolishing them all together could well be too brutal (depending on the opposition!).

Do you need this to play the genre books? Or could you play with just 'OneDice Fantasy' or whatever?

Each book is self-contained, so you don't need Universal if you want to play any of the others. The Universal book is for people who just want the core rules because they already have a homebrew game or background of their own.

My buddy has a copy of this and I really dig it. Lightweight and tight. I'm debating whether or not to get it myself. I have two concerns though:

1.) I'd like to see a system/chart/etc. for designing new skills/abilities... even just a couple examples.
2.) I'd also like to see a monster book, or in lieu of that perhaps a bunch of templates to design your own baddies.

Would you guys consider a "rolling release" where you add new content later?

And, much gratitude for the Quickstart.

Thanks, Jeremy :) We might put together a compilation at some point - and/or possibly a "Complete Creatures" release, but we have a few more genre books we want to get out first. I think a compilation might give you the examples you're looking for (as we vary abilities, skills, and even add Talents, where we think it suits a setting/genre). Thank you for the feedback.

What dice does it use? Roll high or low? Why should I buy this?

What is the size of the book? Looks digest size. Also, is it saddle stitch or perfect bound? Thanks.

Yes, it's digest size (6.14" x 9.21"), and perfect bound. Thanks for your interest!

There's a picture of it here with an A4 pad, if that's any help! :-)

I received my print copy in today's mail. Perfect bound, digest size, small and slim.

I am hoping to use this as a "filler" game with my group when not everyone can make a session.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
