i play ironsworn starforged and the GMA deck is a valuable addition to my solo experience, especially when travelling. On one card I get many inspirations (smell, hear, oracles, locations, etc.) that help me to flesh out my solo game. In addition to the cards, there is an adventure guide. The guide helps me to tell my solo star wars story!

A few weeks ago I bought the cards on PDF and printed to cardstock to try them out. Fantastic! I’ve run DM sessions where I struggled for a name or some sensual observation other than “what you see” and “what you hear”, and these were the perfect answer. Now, some of the sensations/names/etc. are duplicated from deck to deck, but so what? It’s far cooler to pick out the deck that “matches” the theme/genre of the game I am running and I love to support small business and creators. Win win here, folks.

So… I did it. I went ahead and ordered the actual cards. All of the sets.

They are stunning. They’ve got a great weight to them and shuffle so much more easily than cardstock (I know, Captain Obvious here). The printing is crisp and legible, and the little touches on the cards elevate them to a whole new level of coolness.

My only question is: when are you going to create a Film Noir set? Or maybe one with a Greco-Roman history theme? hint hint

Wow--thanks for the kind words! I hope the cards serve you well! Film Noir and Greco-Roman are interesting suggestions... I'll add those to the list of ideas ;-)

As an owner and user of nearly all the GameMaster’s Apprentice decks, I wanted to express how incredibly effective these cards are for not only generating story seeds and NPCs, but also for playing solo or with a small group without a GM. Over this past weekend, I used the sci-fi deck in combination with the (currently still beta) rules for ALONe to play Numenera co-op for myself and my girlfriend. The deck acted as the GM and not only kept the suspense and interest continuous and free-flowing, but brought the story to a satisfying conclusion as well (exactly as if we played using a traditional module with a human gamemaster). It does take some creativity when using the cards when trying to interpret the results but the more you use them, the more intuitive they become.

I’ve used the cards before on many occasions and it always amazes me how well the cards handle the story and keep things moving smoothly. My girlfriend, who only occasionally plays RPGs, was pleasantly surprised by how well they worked, and enjoyed it so much that she wants to continue the story where we left off. So this weekend we will continue with our characters and we are both looking forward to the twists and turns the deck has in store for us!

If you haven’t tried them yet, I give them my highest recommendation. Each deck comes with an “adventure guide” for each genre that help support your use of the cards. Also recommended are the ALONe rules (mentioned earlier), that will assist with guiding your story along. A+++

This is exactly what I was looking for in order to play Classic Traveller/Cepheus Engine solitaire. I purchased the printed cards as well as the pdf. The printed cards are printed just like playing cards, and the print quality is excellent. Each card is double-sided and easy to read. The color scheme used for the SciFi cards works well for me. The included SciFi Adventure Guide is also very helpful with ideas on how to use the various elements of the card. The examples included in the adventure guide work well on their own, but can be easily modified to fit your needs.

The pdf quality is also good; however, I did not want to print and cut out the cards. Self-printing can be done if a person does not want to purchase the printed cards, but I prefer commercially printed cards to doing it myself on cardstock.

I'm using the SciFi cards in conjunction with Paul Elliott's SOLO for Cepheus Engine. The combination of the cards with Paul Elliott's SOLO has created an exceptional experience with my Classic Traveller and Cepheus Engine solitaire role-playing game. The narrative of the story has been enhanced with the use of these cards. They have certainly helped my imagination with creating an interesting storyline for my campaign.

I can see this as a useful tool for science fiction writers, as well as GMs who need ideas on the fly.

Tom

Along with the base set and the horror set, I use these cards in every game I play. If you are curious at all about trying these cards, do it. You will be surprised at how useful they are.

Great for writing as well as RPGs. The ability to whip up situations, people, and items at the draw of a card makes awkward game mastering situations much easier

[Review revised now that the rules have more adventure-generation information.]

This is a packed, information-rich deck of cards to assist the running of a science fiction RPG. It offers multiple fields of information. The individual cards are each printed on both sides of 60 cards, which makes it unclear which side to pick (draw a card, and flip it like a coin, maybe?)

A small wheel of numbers lets you make dice-rolls from d4 to d100. This is VERY handy to make dice-rolls in a secret way for the GM, or by anybody for general noise-reduction. There are fields on the card to allow you to randomly pick evocative first names, sights, sounds, smells, locations, and belongings (in case an NPC living OR dead is encountered) suitable to an SF environment.

The cards are adapted from their set for fantasy, and several fields of the card have different sets of icons that are perhaps more suitable to fantasy. There is a field for the Elder Futhark runes (the runic alphabet of the Vikings) as well as an icon for the Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. This is not much of a drawback since they offer tables of "archetypal" meanings to help you imagine outcomes in any sort of RPG. There is a random verb, subject and object on every card that can add up to over a million combinations if you draw 3 cards. Parts of the cards resemble a more gamer-focused version of Rory's Story Cubes.

What is slightly imperfect about the game is that the instructions still insert a few fantasy examples and mention goblins, bandits in a forest, castles and so forth. They could hone their instructions to be more sharply SF in orientation (although some SF games such as Shadowrun might have no trouble mentioning magic or psionics). The instructions do offer suggestions to "transpose" the meaning of a draw to something more suitable to your game.

They describe how the deck could be used to generate encounters for a solo or GM-free game. An adventure generation scheme has been added to the rules more recently.

Overall, this is a beautiful deck of cards that can be used in different modes: evocative ideas for adventure design before the game, dice-rolls and random draws for the GM to improvise a situation or NPC on the fly, and suggestions for a GM-free game or for generating SF adventures.

I really like these cards. There aren't a lot of options like this for Sci-Fi, which is what I primarily run.

I Kickstarted these, so I started by doing the Print and Play option. MISTAKE. 1) It eats up a lot of ink - just look at all that black. (I did know this going in, of course, but it didn't really hit me until I was about a third of the way through. 2) Cutting them out was tedious. 3) I didn't quite get them cut out to size so I had to RECUT all of them if I wanted to sleeve them.

Which meant I went back and ordered the printed copy! Wasted my ink and my time, alas. Hopefully this review will save someone the trouble? Or at least better prepare you!

Anyway, the printed copy comes on 60 cards, front and back. I don't really like that - I'd have preferred 120 cards printed with just the one side. That said, the cards are nicely printed. I'd never ordered cards from DriveThru before and I am very happy with the result. The colors a crisp, the words are clear and the cards are of acceptable quality. I do intend to sleeve them, however, because I suspect they may fray during use otherwise.

Giving these 4 stars because I feel like the black background was a really poor choice for something that was going to be offered as PnP.
