a simplification of the already simple D&D 5th OGL, this game adds an interesting hook, a brightly colored and surprisingly detailed world, strong appeal and meaningful lore.

where this game really shines are the subtle improvements to the 5e system that make character expression both less complicated and less constricting, an initiative system that keeps everyone involved, and resource systems that make for interesting choices even in the depth of mechanical combat, and a genuine and expressive style and theme.

a direct and compelling tale of betrayal. has some rough bits where players must fail for plot reasons, making it somewhat difficult to run, but it is a otherwise solid adventure.

Five solid, diverse, simple, interesting tales, permitting players to engage in roleplay, combat, dungeon crawls, and every aspect of D&D. i run this regularly at nearby gameshops.

Like most of the of the curse adventures, this one is solid and well written, but suffers a bit from it's poor orginization in the first half of the adventure. don't be surprised if your players lose the thread or need more push then the story provides. the expected actions of the players don't align with typical AL League motives, so be prepared to push a bit and constrain the party's options.

This adventure is great fun to run. the orginization is quite good, and the story is a heart wrencher.

The 5-mini style adventures are usually easy to run, and these are right in line. the hooks are somewhat soft, but can work to compel characters who are interested in the fate of the missing NPCs. These adventures work very well in mixed groups and are tightly organized.

DDAL06-01 A Thousand Tiny Deaths (5e)

This adventure runs really hot and cold. While the rewards and gameplay are interesting and can be very fun to play, the adventure is pretty poorly organized and is a bit of a trial to DM.

The hooks aren't quite strong enough to grab the typical pick-up group, leading to a mid-game detour through the backdrop village to find the plot again.

The core dungeon crawl is super exciting and very mechanically interesting, but suffers a bit from out-of-order side-bar syndrome in the adventure text, making it hard to find the interesting bits burred in the box text; when totally up the rewards for Adventure League, i realized i had simply not offered about half the treasure, because i couldn't find them in the DM text when the characters were exploring that room.

the early combat is a bit too easy even for first time low level characters, but the final boss fight can easily wipe even an experienced meta-gaming party at the top of the level cap; while there is a good progression from 1-round kobalds to death-knight sorcerers, but ramping up from too easy through too hard doesn't make for a balanced combat experience.

if you do plan to buy and run this, take the time to annotate the included map with notes on encounters and treasure, and be prepared to adjust the difficulty on the fly, because its all too easy to lose track of things in the shuffle.

DDAL05-01 Treasure of the Broken Hoard (5e)

While this isn't a standard with my local adventures league, it's a well worn tool in the toolbox. the adventures are small, manageable, self contained, easy to run, easy to play, diverse in genera and scope, and both intuitively fulfilling and mechanically rewarding for new adventurers. The 1-hour play target makes them easy to run as drop-in pick-up-group games during a store game day, and but the tightly interconnected story line and reoccuring characters makes it real hard for people to start in the middle and ruins the experience when someone can't stick around for the whole set.

This has become the go-to introductory adventure set at my LGS. the adventures are small, manageable, self contained, easy to run, easy to play, diverse in genera and scope, and both intuitively fulfilling and mechanically rewarding for new adventurers.

The 1-hour play target makes them easy to run as drop-in pick-up-group games during a store game day, and the loosely connecting story arc rewards players who stick around for multiple adventures.

the quality is about what you would expect from an official AL adventure (i.e. the combat is poorly balanced, the important or useful information is burred in between paragraphs of useless boilerplate text, and the writing is the most hamfisted available) but it's otherwise fine.

Insult to injury: The maps and text are split into little vertical slices, Like some digital paper-shredder puzzle, making it impossible to copy text into game notes or print maps. Probably some ridiculous form of copy protection, because why would you allow DMs to print maps or take notes from an adventure they paid for? much better to screw DMs who paid for this. can't have any player complaints if your DMs quit because of your crappy copy protection and don't run any players!

at almost 700 pages, this is a massive tome, beautifully printed and lovingly illustrated. if you are a fan of the series, this is worth spending a bit extra to get the high quality print. contains core rules, examples of play, details for both traditions and technocracy mages, magic references, and tons and tons of lore and histories.
