The Supernatural Fox

Kitsune-Ken (Fox Fist) is a traditional Japanese hand-gesture game that originated in China. Often played by Samurai, as a drinking game, and Geisha for entertainment, in Kitsune-Ken, a Supernatural Fox (Kitsune) defeats the Village Head (shōya), who defeats the hunter (ryōshi), who defeats the fox.

Fox Becomes Paper

Eventually, Kitsune-Ken made it’s way to Europe and the United States where the fox became paper; the village head became rock and the hunter; scissors.

Fist Becomes Card

Replacing hand gestures with cards levels the playing field and introduces exciting new gameplay options. To get more info, visit www.kitsunekencards.com.

Gameplay

Kitsune-Ken is played with two people and 18 cards—using one of three gameplay options below (or invent your own!). In all cases the cards are shuffled and the winner is determined as follows...

Fox beats Village Head. Village Head beats Hunter. Hunter beats Fox.

To play with a focus on Strategy...

Both players are given 3 of each type of card, for 9 cards (and 9 rounds) total. Players select the card they wish to play, count down to 3, 2, 1 together, and place their card face-up for all to see.

Strategy and Luck

The same as above but the cards are randomly dealt; 9 per player.

Luck of the Draw

All 18 cards are placed in a stack between both players. Each player draws a single card and holds it; face hidden. Both players count down to 3, 2, 1 and place their cards on the table; face up.

Single Deck Run

A regular full game consists of 9 rounds to get through the deck. You keep the cards you win and set them aside along with the cards that you played. All of these are now retired from play. The player with the most collected cards at the end—wins.

Infinite Play

If you want to play for LONG time, use the cards that you’ve won along the way. The game ends when one player has ALL cards.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
