Venture Forth

Venture Forth is a card-based storytelling game, in which you each control one member of the party and describe what happens to your character on your adventures. By answering the questions on the cards and creating Quests, you make your heroes succeed or let them fail, whatever is more interesting to you.

Since the meat of the game is in the cards, the rulebook is available for free, here. The PDF version includes an A4-sized version of the rulebook, as well as all the cards in a layered PDF, so you can print them without the colourful background.

This game is heavily inspired by The Quiet Year by Avery Alder.

You begin with the heroic tier, during which the cards guide you to decide what's your character like, where she's from, what she can do, and why she's doing it.

You continue on to the paragon tier, where you might be asked to travel to far away lands, uncover the ancient origins of what, until now, seemed like a local issue, or go through a sudden transformation such as betraying your beliefs or siding with an enemy.

In two to three hours you’ll reach the maximum level and end your adventuring career with one final, extraordinary Quest. There’s no way to win or to lose, even if your character becomes a god or dies in a gutter. You’re here to tell an interesting story.

I have a further question and comment.

Comment: My third game was at the end of December (yeah, I was slow writing up the game notes). We tried rolling for each quest like I suggested (not just the final quests). It works best if the quest could go either way. Obviously if a quest should pass or fail, there's no need to roll.

Question: One of the players had an attribute that they "boosted" via "level-up." For the final quest, they wanted to add 2 bonuses for that attribute. I didn't allow it, but since then think I should have. If they hadn't boosted the attribute, they could have added another attribute that would have given them the second bonus. My question is do they only get 1 bonus for a modified attribute or 2?

One of things I did since VF was published, is create a system in which textual descriptions can have "intensity", in order to be able to come up with a numerical difference between two descriptions. So for example if "trained" is equal 1, "incredibly experienced" should be equal 2. In general, if there description explains something is more intense than before (or compared to other things), then it should be worth 2.
I suggest using the same system in VF, and I'll be implementing it in the next edition.

I've played this twice now, once solo and again with my game group. Both times it was a success. I have a question, an observation, and a suggestion.

Question: When you play the last Heroic card, all characters "level up" by adding a Quality. It's implied that this could/should happen when you play the last Paragon card, but it's not stated as such. Was that a rules omission or a design choice?

Observation: I like the dice mechanic for the final quests, but for both games it was too easy (I only had 1 quest that needed to be rolled for, all the others were automatic successes).

Suggestion: Most people will choose to succeed at every quest. You could include an optional rule for people who like more uncertainty in their games by requiring them to roll to determine the outcome of ALL quests (handled just like it is at the end of the game). Example: A Heroic quest succeeds on a 4+, a Paragon quest succeeds on a 6+, and an Epic quest succeeds on a 8+. The final quests...See more

Hello! Good feedback. I'm working on a V2.0, and it will include some random element for quests, yes!
The heroes are not "supposed" to level up after the last Paragon card, it should only happen after the Heroic. But I see nothing wrong with doing so.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
