Poisoned Chalice: Pass the Cup

Poisoned Chalice is a card game for 2 to 6 players. In it, you are competing nobles at a banquet table. As talk passes around the table you are adding wine (cards) to a shared chalice (common pile). When the chalice is full, the player holding it drinks (wins the trick).

However, as well as wine you can choose to add poison. Not too much (adding up to exactly 31) has no effect, but too much (adding up to more than 31) has a negative effect.

What happens when one player plays a Jack and the next player draws and plays a King that would not otherwise be legal to play? E.g.:

1. Player A plays two clubs.
2. Player B plays jack spades.
3. Player C draws king diamonds. <-- What is the value of the chalice after this play?

Thanks for your interest in my little game :)

I think you are asking if the Jack makes it to exactly 31? In that case the hand ends immediately and it really does not matter that it would have caused a forced move. Player C would not play any card.

If the Jack brought it to 30, then the King would be worth 1 and bring the total to 31, ending the hand.

Does this help?

I don't think that addresses my question. The rules as I understand them suggest that the King is not playable unless the running total is at least 25, but, if played on a total of 25-30, playing a King brings the total to 31.

First question: Is that understanding correct?

My understanding of the rules suggest that when a Jack is played, it compels the next player to draw a card and immediately play that drawn card, whatever that is.

Second question: Is that correct?

Assuming my understanding of the rules is accurate, my ultimate question is: What happens when a Jack compels the next player to draw and play a King where a King could not otherwise be played?

In my example:

0. New trick starts (running total is 0).
1. Player A plays two clubs (running total is now 2).
2. Player B plays jack spades (running total is now 3).
3. Player C is compelled to draw and play a card. Player C draws king diamonds, but can't play it...See more

Ah! I see!

Yes you are quite right: those are the rules, and I've not included the case you've described. I'll add in that clause in the rules and upload a new version within the next few hours.

To address the question now, the King is still not playable - because more than 6 is required to close the hand and the king can only count to 6. Therefore, a king drawn by force is put to the bottom of the deck. And substitute card is then drawn and played.

Hope that addresses my omission. Thanks for pointing it out. Good gaming

Thanks for the clarification. Wouldn't the described remedy lead to an accumulation of Kings at the end of the game as the deck was exhausted, though? I supposed players could develop house rules, such as: A force-drawn King that would otherwise be unplayable is treated as a ___ (zero or one or six or Queen or something something) of the same suit.

That leads me to my second question: What if the force draw reveals another Jack? For example:

1. Player A plays two jack spades (total is now 1).
2. Player B draws and plays jack diamonds (total is now 2).

Is it still Player B's turn? Are they forced to draw-and-play again? Do they lose their option to play as normal?

The kings would only accumulate in that rare occurrence. It's certainly possible, though.

In your second case, B is forced to play. And since that forces the play to move on, he/she would lose the option to play a card of their choice.

Hope this helps. Thanks again

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
