TALES OF BLADES AND HEROES RPG (PDF)

Tales of Blades and Heroes is a fast-playing, uncomplicated set of fantasy rpg rules based on the origins-nominated Song of Blades and Heroes miniature rules. Its key features are:
  • Minimal bookkeeping;
  • A character sheet that fits on a 3x5” index card;
  • D6 based skill and action system;
  • Simple enough for newcomers, yet sophisticated enough to satisfy expert players;
  • No classes or levels: create any character with a point system;
  • Combat is based on a single d6 roll and damage tables: play faster, meaningful battles where your tactical decisions matter;
  • Play with miniatures, counters or paper figures;
  • Online support via the song of blades yahoo group and an active community of players and creators;
  • Story and character-based rewards: gain experience for being imaginative and playing in character;
  • No spells to memorize: the freeform magic system encourages ingenuity and lets you create any magical effects through the combination of power words.
  • Can be used as a tactical, RPG-lite combat system to be used with miniatures.

Note: this book has all you need to begin playing, but we are working on a GM’s book, Tales of Beasts and Perils.

This is a generic fantasy system. No background is enclosed, although it is easy to convert existing settings.

The ZIP file contains PNG covers, a full color pdf, an inksaving version PDF (all illustrations and page backgrounds removed), and a PDF of character sheets.

I feel that this comment is misleading:

"Note: this book has all you need to begin playing, but we are working on a GM’s book, Tales of Beasts and Perils."

There are no monsters, no guidance for creating combat scenarios. Basically, it's a Player's Handbook only. One could reasonably design all the GM components themselves if they wanted to spend massive amounts of time, but that is not "all I need to begin playing." That is "half of what I need to begin playing" with the raw tools provided for me to design the rest of the game myself, or pay more for the GM guide.

Here is how Wizards of the Coast advertises the D&D Player's handbook:
Everything a player needs to create heroic characters for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.

Notice they don't say "everything you need to begin playing," because that is not an accurate statement.

It's pretty exasperating that you can't buy a PDF of this game to match the only available POD version (or vice versa). I had no idea because the covers look identical. I guess it serves me right for ignoring my principle NEVER to buy a PDF without a preview! Regretting this purchase...

I've read this comment three times and I'm not sure I understand. What's the issue with the PDF and POD?

A version of this game is available print-on-demand through both Lulu.com and Amazon (Createspace). It is a different version (6x9, black and white) than the one available here in PDF (letter size, full color). As far as I can tell, you cannot buy a print version anywhere that matches this PDF, nor can you buy a PDF anywhere that matches the edition available in print.

I noticed after the fact that the print version is described on Lulu and Amazon as the "Essential Edition," but you would have to be paying close attention to realize these are two different products, because the covers are EXACTLY THE SAME.

Sorry for double-posting, one more question ^^’
In Combat section of the rules it goes “Each character who is involved in a specific melee spends one action attacking”. Does it mean that defending character also spends 1 action even if it doesn’t have one yet because he is further in initiative line or maybe he already acted (so going into negative actions like -1)? What if defending character is waiting? Does he have his actions reduced while defending? Thanks!

I have question regarding Agile special rule. It reads “Character has +1 to Q rolls when performing acts of dexterity and coordination.“ Does that mean it improves Quality for this types of rolls (character with Q4+ succeeds on rolls 3+)? I’m confused because I thought rolls can be improved only through “boosts”. Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
