Update! As of August 2017, this deck now includes the 14-card expansion available originally on our Patreon, and a custom tuck box to fit the whole deck, at no extra cost!

As the dungeon master, when your adventuring group leaves town and begins trekking to the next objective (whether it's another town or a distant dungeon), it can sometimes be difficult to come up with new ideas for what happens during the journey. As a result, so many DMs just skip through travel sequences, cutting "straight to the action," but missing out on some great opportunities for world-building and character development. A good campaign should give players highs, lows, and everything in between, and should allow them much more than just combat as a means to express their characters.

That's where we come in! In the expanded 54-card Pixel Loot - Overland Travel deck, each card has a number of variables and ideas to help you generate events on the fly. In the first text box (with the sun graphic) you have a plot hook for something to happen during daylight hours. In the second text box (with the moon graphic) you have a plot hook for something to happen during the night, while your characters are camping out (sometimes directly related to the daylight plot hook). Whether you use the day or night hook, the other one can easily be saved for later to bring closure to a minor diversion, or encourage further investigation.

These plot hooks are meant to be non-combat opportunities for character development and setting enrichment, but many can certainly lead to a hostile encounter if you have one prepared. They can be mundane distractions, unsolvable mysteries, or just the opening of the rabbit hole. How far you take these hooks is up to you!

Below the day and night travel hooks, you'll find an "hours" block, and a "random thought" block. The hours block is a random number between 3 and 18 (like rolling 3d6). You can use this to figure how many quiet hours pass between drawing cards while traveling, or how many hours a particular event or effect lasts. The random thought block contains a random musing that may help get your creative juices flowing, or give your players something to talk about while you get the next encounter ready. Some are silly, some are serious, and most relate to travel, roads, inns, and camping out, keeping with the theme of the Overland Travel deck.

Along the bottom of each card is a row of four icons that help you build interesting and diverse NPCs on the fly. This can be an easy way to remind yourself to use a variety of different races and classes for your roadside encounters (because diversity is awesome), and keep your players from getting bored with the same old NPCs all the time. You would draw four cards, and put together the icons along the bottom in the following way:

  • 1st icon: Gender (5 varieties)
  • 2nd icon: Race (12 varieties)
  • 3rd icon: Class (12 varieties)
  • 4th icon: Attitude (10 varieties)

You can use the icon key included in the Print-and-Play to interpret the symbols, or just make up your own meanings!

It's absolutely ridiculous that these decks don't include the icon key *as part of the deck*. Or that the key isn't available as a separate *free* PDF.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
