Character Theory

Watermarked PDF

Create characters with relevant connections to worldbuilding and storytelling.

Any System! Any Setting! You’ve created fantasy roleplaying characters before. Odds are that the focus of the system you used was on the crunchy bits. The process tacked background details on at the end that may not have been relevant to the adventures you played. Most of the time, your character’s back story ended up as the storytelling equivalent of a dump stat. It’s disappointing, it’s wasteful, and it doesn’t leave you with the satisfying roleplaying experience you were looking for.

The abilities your character has will hook them into the setting by default. Their connection to the adventure might be tenuous at best. A degree of motivational handwavium and plot contrivance serves to get you, the player, a seat at the table so the game can go on. Beyond that, it’s up to you to make you character's background relevant. You have to put in the work to make them more than a collection of special abilities and bonuses. But what if it weren’t that way? What if the character, the setting, and the story were all intrinsically tied together within the fantasy roleplaying adventure?

I wrote Character Theory to help you create characters with relevant connections to worldbuilding and storytelling. You’ll be able to use the details about your character to make your fantasy gaming experience interesting, unique, and personal. This supplement is for use with any game system, or any setting, and will help you to develop elements that unite character, setting, and story to create a more fulfilling roleplaying experience.

The Foragers Guild Guides

Because you asked for it, a new line of character, worldbuilding, and adventure creation aids from Dancing Lights Press! In the spirit of our best-selling titles for both creative writers and tabletop roleplayers, the Foragers Guild is a series of supplements useful with all popular fantasy games including Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Dungeon World, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Tunnels & Trolls, and more.

Each volume examines a different aspect of fantasy roleplaying from the perspective of the 3 Pillars of Fantasy Adventure: Characters, Worldbuilding, and Stories. You’ll learn how to flesh out the back stories of player characters, adversaries, and non-player characters. We’ll show you how to establish and expand various elements within your fantasy world. The ways that the tropes of fantasy can be leveraged into stories that challenge and excite players will be explained.

How do you differentiate this product from your Building Characters product? Both clock in at about 100 pages.

Building Characters is aimed at both creative writers and tabletop roleplayers while not being genre-specific. Character Theory is specifically targeted at fantasy roleplaying. It takes an approach that will be carried throughout the entire Foragers Guild Guide line, examining the intersection of character, setting, and story where great adventures and game sessions are born. It is the first of a series that will examine several aspects of fantasy gaming, beginning with the fundamentals.

Understood; so fantasy genre characters are the focus. Is your target audience the referee/GM or the player? Does this product instruct the player how to integrate the connections, setting and individual's backstory during many table play sessions and not just character generation?

It covers both player characters and NPC's, so it's for everyone. It's about table play, and how to leverage character, setting, and story elements for roleplaying opportunities.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
