H. P. Lovecraft Preparatory Academy

As a student at the prestigious H.P. Lovecraft Preparatory Academy, you’ll uncover conspiracies, deal with bullies and uncaring professors, explore dangerous steam tunnels, study for exams, escape from horrible monstrosities that humanity was never meant to see, and try to avoid an extended stay at Arkham Sanitarium. And that's just orientation week!

  • A semi-humorous RPG in the tradition of Saturday morning cartoons featuring mystery-busting kids…only the monsters are real.
  • Features a detailed sandbox environment on the campus of a haunted New England boarding school.
  • Six different Student Types to choose from, including Witches, Summoners, or Mad Scientists.
  • A simple task resolution derived from the PDQ System: roll 2d6 + skill modifier against a target number.
  • Design your own faculty! Want Dr. Frankenstein to be the new Biology professor? No problem!
  • Thanks to the medical breakthroughs developed by Dr. West in the school infirmary, your character can’t die…but sanity is another matter entirely.
  • Tons of optional rules to customize your individual game.

Choose Your System

HPL Prep is available in three systems to suit your academic needs. Play the original PDQ rules, leap into the Pip System, or explode into action with our Savage Worlds edition.

Why is the PDQ version more expensive? The PIP version is cheaper. :)

Is it because it is hardcover? Guessing both are the same dimensions (6x9).

It’s based on what they contain. PDQ = complete rules and setting. Pip = setting mostly, but core rules are in the Pip System Corebook (sold separately)

Does the print copy have all three systems? I am actually interested in the Pip System version. :)

This is the Core PDQ version. the Savage Worlds and Pip System versions are sold separately, though. Cheers!

What is the difference between the systems. I have an idea of savage worlds, but not sure of the other two.

The Pip System is our family-style system, using d6 pools. You can grab a Quickstart for free to check it out. The system for this core game is a PDQ hack that's pretty darn cool!

We are currently working on it. the Printer was giving us issues with our files (you know, like they do lol). But soon... likely right after the new year. Keep an eye out, we'll be announcing the moment they are available.

Could there maybe be more of a preview than the first six pages? It's difficult to really get a sense of the game from just the first few pages...and $20 for a PDF is too much for me to purchase something essentially sight-unseen. Maybe give a few key pages from each chapter, so that 'what the game is about' can be gleaned, without giving away the store, so to speak. Thanks for considering!

Certainly. I'll set that up right now and expand it out to the first 12 pages to give you a sense of the game, its aesthetic, and introduction.

Twelve pages is definitely an improvement over six, but it's still not much of a preview. A third of those pages are basically just full-page art. Then there's the table of contents (somewhat informative), the credits page (yawn), three pages on how to play an RPG (do you really think anyone's going to see the preview who doesn't already know that?) and three pages of fiction. All in all, it gives a decent sample of the writing and art style, and not much else.

I've seen far too many publishers on this site take the lazy way out and just slap up the first X pages of their PDF without any regard to the contents of those pages. It makes it look like they either don't know how to market their game or can't be bothered to try. The purpose of a preview is to help sell your product -- if you want it to do that effectively, you really ought to put more thought into curating what's in it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
