Instant Adversaries

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Create basic adversaries right when you need them. Instant Adversaries provides a quick and easy way to generate stats for NPCs and vehicles on the fly.

  • Pick the prime characteristic for the NPC.
  • Choose from a list of stats built around that characteristic, alter the list, or choose your own.
  • Select a list of skills for general character types, or customize as needed.
  • Pick a talent or two from a basic list.
  • Quickly generate stats for soak, wound threshold, strain threshold, and defense.
  • Create minions, rivals, and/or nemesis NPCs.

Generate basic vehicle and weapons stats.

Pick a vehicle type: ground, air, water, space or exotic.

  • Chose a specific civilian or military vehicle from the list. Alter specific stats as needed.
  • Select the attached vehicle weapons, if any.

UPDATE: Instant Adversaries can now be used electronically with its new PDF form fillable features, which replicate the hardcopy options. Note that none of the form fields, field text, check boxes, or radio buttons are visible when a harcopy is printed.

Is the Cunning block correct? It is the same as Agility (except for the last line), even to the point where the "MAX" line has only 4 Cunning but 5 Agility.

I don’t believe it is. It’s the same box as Agility. I edited mine to Cunning five and Agility two.
I request a reply from the creator for an update and/or clarification please. Thank you in advance.

The Cunning block Cunning column should be 5,4,3,3,2. For now the Agility column could be 2, 2, 3, 2, 1, but I'll revisit the Cunning block for an upcoming update.

The current version is not form fillable in the PDF itself. However, I'm working on an update to the file to add that functionality.

I'm curious how much this differs from the Adversary Creation content in the Expanded Players Guide?

Thanks in advance for anyone that might know.

This is designed to create a quick and dirty adversary at the table with minimal impact on stopping play. Basically, you check boxes to select stats, skills, etc. using pregenerated sets built around the primary characteristic you need for that adversary (or vehicle). It isn't intended to build primary adversaries in an adventure. It is for those unplanned encounters that happen in RPGs, instead of trying to modify a published stat block on the fly. The full size preview shows filled out example pages. Each characteristic gets half a page.

The Expanded Players Guide goes into a lot more detail about creating specific adversaries and typical types of adversaries found in a variety of genres. It is still intended to build adversaries relatively quickly, but more likely between game sessions and for more important adversaries in the adventure. It also gives a lot more advice about adversary creation. Basically, if you need more detailed adversaries and those with story longevity, the Expanded Players...See more

Would be perfect, but you can't write within the PDF itself!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll consider adding that in the future. Adding simple blanks to fill out should be easy enough at least.

Incredible resource. I bought this just on Sterling's name alone. I was not prepared for how great it would be. You can create something to fight in about 15 seconds (that is not an exaggeration either).

Sterling, you should add a pages at the end for each of the 6 stats and fill it with the block.

Very useful to fast create NPCs, but I would like to give also some feedback to make this product even better:

1) How about suggestions to create non-humanoid adversaries? I think that would really increase the value of the product to the stars!
2) Under the Talents & Abilities tables, I'm confused about the Adversary, Dodge and Defensive Stance entrance, because on the Core Rulebook these talents upgrade difficulty not add difficulty or setbacks dice as your table suggest. Is that a designed choice?

Overall, a great resource for veteran and newbie GMs!

To point number 2, I was also curious about this. Indeed, the Adversary talent is meant to replace Dodge, Sidestep, et al for adversaries.

Other than that, I love the easy of creation and I'm sure it'll get some good use at my table!

Thanks for the feedback Marco.

1. Do you mean for monsters and creatures? I included some basic claws, XXX, on Brawl and Agility which can be swapped to other characteristics of needed. There are so many things monsters might have that I felt that the GM could add whatever super specific ability was needed. What would be helpful to you? I suppose I could add separate pages geared more towards monsters or animals. I didn't want this to get too big or complicated for ease of use at the table.

2. Ah, the classic inadvertant increase vs upgrade swap... Yes, these should be upgrade, not increase. I'll fix it early next week and update the file. You should be notified automatically when available.

Thanks for the feedback Christopher.

See my reply to Marco and my additional comments below.

Lower power NPCs might rely on the more specific talents instead of the more encompassing Adversary talent, so the GM has the option of choosing either Adversary or one or more others. Should that be clarified in the instructions?

Thank you for your reply!

As for 1) Yep, I mean creatures and monsters, but more specifically the fact that the main difference between humanoid and monsters in Genesys is that monsters tend to have higher number of wounds and strain. So I think it would be a nice touch to have a little paragraph talking about that and how much to add to the base 12 /10 /8 + Bwn/Will wounds and strain calculations

Hoping my feedback helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
