The Everdeck

The Everdeck is a card game system that can be adapted to play many traditional and modern games.  It’s a portable travel companion, universal proxy deck, and game designer’s prototyping tool all in one.

This isn’t just a deck with extra ranks and suits. Its 120 cards can map to many distinct game systems:

  • Two copies of a standard 52-card deck
  • Two other traditional decks: Tarot and Hanafuda
  • Up to 12 suits or up to 25 ranks (Lost CitiesColorettoArboretum)
  • Multiple or uneven counts of certain ranks (HanabiPairs)
  • Sequential decks (The Mind6 Nimmt)
  • Word games (Letter Jam)
  • Social games (Ultimate Werewolf)

The Everdeck is designed with a ruthless combinatoral efficiency.  Beneath its minimalist pen-and-ink design lies layers of mathematical and linguistic patterns.  This isn’t just a deck with haphazardly placed extra glyphs; rather, it aims to be both beautiful and practical.

The included free PDF describes all the Everdeck's systems in detail, including a list of example game mappings. More information can be found on Boardgamegeek.

A friend brought the ever deck to a game jam this past weekend, and its usefulness cannot be overstated. It is a brilliant tool, and two more of us immediately set out to buy our own decks for future use.

If you are interested in designing card games, this deck is essential for standing in for cards that don't yet exist, and for developing systems of play.

[Purchased PDF + Card(s) bundle and purchased Print-to-Play separately]

A little misleading to have the pdf as a paid for document. The pdf itself is an overview of how one might use the cards and what they mean, unlike my original assumption in which I thought it would include a print-to-play format (This explanation is in the last sentence of the description and many people would miss it if they didn't read the whole thing).

That format is included here: https://www.drivethrucards.com/m/product/368520
(This also includes the PDF as part of the purchase)

The PDF in my opinion should be a free document, pay what you want, or only obtainable by purchasing the cards or the print-to-play, as it doesn't include any of the cards you would use to actually play the game, only examples. Buying the PDF itself would only allow you to see if you would actually want to purchase the cards and buying the cards themselves would only serve you as far as guessing what you would want...See more

Hello, I haven't checked this page in a while. I apologize for this - you are right that the PDF is supposed to be free (and that was how I intended to do it in the first place).

The problem was that when DriveThruCards updated their costs, I added $2.00 to the cost of the product, and I didn't notice that doing so also adds $2.00 to the free PDF. This was my error entirely. It has since been reverted - the PNP costs $3.00, the systems PDF is free and comes with the PNP.

Besides the tarot emulation, any ideas on how to use the Everdeck as an oracle- Ie story-telling, writing, etc?

I really enjoy my copy and have been playing lots of games. I've been introducing my friends who dont play much board games to various card games and they quite like the look of it too.

One complaint is that in printing some of the card backs are a bit redder than the others, not the same shade of gray. I dont know if anyone else has noticed, and I tend to forget about it while playing, but if you are just looking at the cards themselves and arent distracted it is definitely noticeable.

Would you be able to make a micro or mini card deck?

Something a bit smaller. Half or quarter poker deck for travel?

Thank you.

Would you consider making a zip file with all the single cards (jpg, omg, etc) so that it can be loaded into a vtt or virtual card deck app?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
