Castle of the Dead: A Micro Chapbook RPG

ADD TO WISHLIST >

An undead horde has awoken from its ancient slumber in a nearby abandoned castle. Will you, brave hero, be able to quell this threat before they invade town?

Castle of the Dead is a Micro Chapbook RPG--an ultra-light roleplaying game that fits in a single folded chapbook. Simply print off the two rules pages back-to-back, fold in half, and you have a completely playable Micro Chapbook RPG.

These rules are specially designed for solo play on a grid map or graph paper but may also be used as quick and simple rules for a traditional GM run RPG game. Combine with other Micro Chapbook RPGs for extra options!

This file includes both the full-color and printer-friendly versions.

When you roll on doors, will these always be surplus to the one you entered the room by? So can there not be any cul-de-sacs?

It is so simple I just dived in and my character died in his first auto-generated room, so did the second and the third eventually finished off the monsters that had killed his predecessors - only to be wiped out in his first self rolled room. This following up the castle made by dead characters is not strictly in this ruleset but it seemed a good idea.

This game seems great! I'm currently playing through it right now. I have questions. Do I have to do a CH check for Bravery every turn, or only once at the beginning of battle? Why can't guns like the Hand Cannon do a range of 1-2 squares instead of 4? And why no bows? Also, does Ranged and Melee go in one round or do I pick one to do it?

Markey, glad you're enjoying the game. Yes, bravery checks happen every round of combat. It is a measure of your willpower to remain in the battle and keep your confidence up. Ranged weapons don't work in close quarters because the rooms are too tightly wound together and enemies are too close to get a proper shot off. It is like in some games where if you try to make a ranged attack while you're close to an enemy they get a free attack. It just doesn't work thematically. There are short bows, longbows, and crossbows in the game, but in other chapbook scenarios and in the 2 core rulebooks. Ranged and melee both happen every round. Hope that helps.

In this scenario the cloak gives health and chainmail give willpower. I played them as reverse of this, though to be fair I just bought blessed armor because it is the best.

Makes sense to me! The game is open-ended with the intention to be homebrewed if you wish. Thanks!

This seems great! I actually don't have any graph paper lying around but I do have plenty of dungeon tiles! A few questions:
If you run out of a room back into a room you've been in does it respawn monsters?
What if you don't have a melee weapon? Do you automatically fail the strength check, or just do no damage?
If you die you start back at square one with 2d6 gold only? I was thinking of leaving perished adventurers and their stuff in the dungeon where they died.

Justin! Thanks for playing.
*If you left the room empty, roll 1D6. On a roll of 6, new monsters appear. You don't earn new treasure. The deluxe core rulebook goes into more detail on this.
*If you don't have a melee weapon, roll the strength roll as normal as a sort of "dodge" roll. If you pass, you dodge the enemy attack. If you fail, take damage.
*You could easily delve back into the same dungeon using the backtracking rule above until you reach the room where your previous character perished to collect all the items and gold!

This is a great little product, Noah. I just ran in and out of my first dungeon. I’ll be grabbing the deluxe and hacking to my heart’s content, but here are some observations and questions:
* how should fighting 4 monsters of LF=2 be different from fighting one monster of LF=8?
* have you thought about the interaction between monsters and room size or treasure? I’m going to limit # monsters to room squares and think about monsters giving a bonus to the treasure roll.
* I understand the old school aesthetic of rolling under, but I’ve hacked it to be STAT as +0/+0/+1/+2 to start and all rolls need to be greater than or equal to 6 for success. This got me into my happy space of rolling high to win while preserving probabilities.
* keep up the good work!

Matthew, thank you so much for the comments! I love some of your ideas.
*I guess the only difference is the "Story" involved in the fight.
*I love this idea. Limiting the monsters to the number of squares is great. I think the thought had passed my mind during really early designs. Didn't make it into the final product.
*I enjoy this style fo rolling and it is completely acceptable.
Thank you!

Dude you probably have read my mind when you produced the deluxe book lol, but anyway what about a setting book or a creature catalog for a follow up to deluxe.

John, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the new books I'm working on. Obviously, there will continue to be the free mini products such as this one, but I have a good number of deluxe ones in the works as well!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
