Shoot People in Space

ADD TO WISHLIST >

I am excited (and nervous!) to introduce Shoot People in Space!

Shoot People in Space (from here on, SPEIS) is 94 pages of wargaming goodness, offering rules for building and fighting with science fiction miniatures.

The game is intended for head-to-head play and perfectly suited to multi-player chaos but can also be played solo or with two players teaming up against the bad guys.

* * *

The typical gaming army size is from 8 to maybe 15 figures, making the game easy to collect and build for. If you already have armies for games like Renegade Scout or enemy squads painted up for Five Parsecs you can probably sit down and play right away.

* * *

Gameplay is heavily inspired by early sci-fi games like Laserburn, Combat 3000 and Spacefarers in spirit, though not in exact mechanics.

Battles are fought in phases with alternating activations: In the action phase your figures take turns carrying out one action (moving, firing, doing something else) while in the firefight phase most figures can fire (potentially shooting a second time).

Combat uses a simple 2D6 table with several unexpected factors built in: Firers can fumble or inflict critical hits and the use of a separate Threat die can cause surprise reactions such as the targets diving for cover or firing back. Gun battles plays out quickly and chaotically.

The rules also provide an additional element of liveliness by troops occasionally going out of control: As a result of combat, they may be running away, holding a position or rushing at the enemy and will continue to do so until they are brought under control.

* * *

The usual slew of extra options are included including things like blowing up terrain and blasting through doors.

* * *

Troop types include 3 figure teams of infantry, single characters and bikes (including “drifter” hover bikes) with additional rules included for combat robots, random giant monsters and more. You can select from 11 species taken from the Unified Space game setting and preconfigured load-outs are available to make army building time be as fast as possible. A points system is included to allow pick-up games.

The game can be played with any single-mounted scifi figures you have and works in both 15mm and 28mm.

* * *

SPEIS is intended for head-to-head play with 10 scenario objectives to pick from, but we also offer tools for non player forces and a random unit generator. These are great for solo play or to have a third party force show up mid battle if you like.

Options are provided for persistent play: This allows you to build a roster of units and when you use them in battle, they will be able to level up (or die). This allows you to experience a degree of progression even if you are primarily playing pick up games against random forces or in a club setting with multiple players. The “Mercenary mode” focuses things by restricting players to a single force that they have to use over multiple games while trying to achieve bounties.

Finally 5 pages of Game Mastering advice is provided for players who want to experience sci-fi miniatures gaming the way it was back in the day.

* * *

SPEIS is a perfect middle ground between the man-to-man campaigns of Five Parsecs and the much larger battlefields of Renegade Scout / Clash on the Fringe and is adaptable to almost any style of gameplay from pick-up games with prebuilt armies to Game-mastered campaigns to solo action.

Hi folks - I love Five Parsecs and bought the 5 Core 3rd edition rules to play PVP (5-10 minis) - I just want something simple to pick up and play. Wondering if anyone can recommend this over 5Core? My minis are a total mix of all sorts of armies and systems so don't need army specific. Great games!! Lots of fun!!

Dave, I have played 5 Parsecs in various forms in head-to-head play, and it works just fine. There isn't any difference with me playing myself as the "enemy" player or someone else [assuming you don't have hyper-competitive pals]. I think the best thing to do is each player draws up a squad and each provides the opposition to that squad. So every time you meet up you play once as Enemy and once with your squad. The side that does best after several games and at campaign end is "the winner". So it is still competitive but a lot more narrative. I used 5 Kilomoters from Leipzig [a black powder napoleonics game] for Stormtroopers v. Rebel Scum and it worked just fine with no changes. SPEIS looks like an entirely different animal...

I already own Five Parsecs From Home also by the same author, how is this different or is it close enough to maybe be a duplicate in my collection?

Cheers. Shoot People is less aimed at narrative campaigns and more geared towards pick up battles.It is also aimed at somewhat larger forces.

You can check an AAR here https://www.thetabletopskirmisher.com/2022/04/no-more-shooting-people-in-space.html and have a look

Hey Ivan, the AAR really doesn't tell you much, it has less information than the remarks you put up top [which are quite good, nicely detailed, I think I know where you went with this title]. I'll reach out to you about a more detailed review. Best, Alex

Even in the Nordic Weasel catalog there are multiple SF skirmish rules. Why would I want this game instead of say, Renegade Scout 2?

You can peruse an AAR here to see what the game plays like.
https://www.thetabletopskirmisher.com/2022/04/no-more-shooting-people-in-space.html
It is aimed at a smaller scale than RS (about half size basically) and with more emphasis on unpredictable outcomes and battlefield chaos, where RS is much more predictable.

I have a pretty serious doubt and can't seem to find a clear answer in the rules.

It is said that squaddies each activate individually during the action phase, but then later under "group shooting" it appears that only one figure actually gets to shoot, with potential "to hit" bonuses from the other two.

How does it work exactly? Does each squaddie get to shoot or is it always only one of them that does the actual firing?
What about the Firefight phase?

Thank you very much for any clarification.

Cheers!

Squaddies must take the same action (p.11 under Action Phase). When moving, they all move individually and move in different speeds (p.16). When shooting, select one figure to "take the shot" and get a bonus for the rest (p.20)

I hope that helps?

I think I've finally found the perfect small scale squad combat game for myself. I'm just playing solo nowadays , I find the painting and modeling aspect of the hobby to be therapeutic, and am looking for rules that aren't to deep but still strategic enough to make them fun. This game feels just right. Really like the cover and the commodore 64 style font too. Looking forward to many more games.

Gawddanggit Ivan -your output is just insane! Here I am, currently looking for a head-to-head skirmish game to supplement your excellent 5 Parsecs From Home and was just sifting through your prolific catalogue, and then you go and drop another one!
I think it's about time you help us out here and put up some sort of matrix of how all the different games compare -I'm thinking model count, board size, complexity, modes (co-op, solo, head-to-head), setting and such. As of now I got analysis/paralysis trying to wrap my head around all the options☺

Oh I am so sorry! I was messing with my email a while ago and I think the notification went to the moon. I am working on trying to get something done up on the new blog at https://nordicweasel.posthaven.com/ so let me see what I can get together in the near future.

Again, so sorry :(

No worries mate! I actually felt a bit like a douche after typing it -it hasn't gone unnoticed how much time guys like you spend answering questions on all types of platforms, way above and beyond...
But I'll look to the new blog for a soon to come comparison.

Oh -and now I have your attention -any timetable for the second expansion for 5 Parsecs?!

Will this book follow a hard limit of 94 pages, or could future updates possibly increase the page count?

There was one section I just could not get to work and I cut, so if I can get that done later I might add it in.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
