Blades in the Deck is a series of card decks containing play aids for people playing and running Blades in the Dark!

This is the Factions & Locations deck, useful for setting up a crew, and also for providing the GM a quick range of possibilities during play.

In this deck, you'll find cards covering the factions & locations of interest in Doskvol:

  • 3 instructions cards
  • 53 faction cards
  • 17 location cards: 12 districts, 5 beyond the city borders

Use them to drop factions into play, select them as allies or rivals for your crew, entanglements from fallout, determining who controls territory the players are entering, and more!

Instruction, faction, and location card examples

Now you can have the distinctive flavors of the haunted city of Doskvol at your fingertips. What faction is targeting your crew now? Who will your next heist infuriate? Where is the meet? Who is our contact? Draw a card to find out!

Each faction card has NPCs with at-a-glance personalities and roles, ready to represent the faction. Turf provides quick inspiration for meeting locations or targets. The faction's allies and enemies give immediate motivations for intrigue and opportunity. Each faction's tier is marked at the top, and a quirk gives GMs a distinctive flavor to make the faction memorable. You can set aside cards for factions that take an interest in your crew, for quick reference and a visual reminder. Draw faction cards to get ideas for who targets them with an entanglement, who is hiring for a quick heist, or whose territory will host the next job--even if that faction isn't the target!

Location cards provide a brief summary of districts and outlying areas. District cards include a map to locate the district in the city, as well as the ratings for what scoundrels may find there. Cards have landmarks within districts and in the outlying areas. A GM can draw a district or outlying area card for a selection of landmarks, and the action can be set at or near one of those locations. Maybe a contact wants to meet there, or the heist will go down nearby, or the landmark is near the crew's new hideout, or the venue may be hosting the next aristocratic gathering.

Cards include page numbers for quick reference to the Blades in the Dark rulebook. The cards feature faction and location information from the book, with additional elaborations and additions to round out the factions and locations with tantalizing additions to add more depth to the setting.

Narrow your choices and provide interesting options by drawing a couple cards to fuel your inspiration. Your scoundrels can explore Doskvol's shadowy lanes and tangled intrigues by laying out a few faction cards in a location, choosing sides and targets, and playing to find out what happens next.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
