The Deck of Destiny is a storytelling compendium designed for solo-RPG players, but the adventures within can also be easily adjusted for groups and co-operative play. Make ability checks, fight or flee, and discover secrets which take you closer to your goal. Four campaigns sit inside a single publication: a post-apocalyptic wasteland; a celestial observatory; the depths of an inescapable prison; and a long forgotten battlefield crawling back to life. Choose your adventure, or let the cards decide! All the player needs is a standard pack of playing cards; no need for dice or complex mechanics.

The Deck of Destiny is a blend of classic 'choose your own adventure' writing with a journaling style experience; players can follow the narrative as the cards dictate and fill any creative gaps as they wish.

* Rules-Lite *

All the player needs is a standard pack of playing cards; we have created a lite rule-set which allows simple yet varied character creation, without a need for dice or complex mechanics.

* How to Play *

Simply draw a random playing card and then match the result to our campaign guide to outline the setting, quest objectives and journey time. Pause and play your game as needed – each turn takes place across a single in-game day.

* Survive Your Journey *

Draw three cards and find the matching encounters for you (or your party) to endure. Each encounter must be dealt with in the order they are drawn – the longer the journey, the more encounters to survive.

* Advanced Play *

Optional rules such as exhaustion and corruption if you want to make things more challenging. On the final day of your journey, draw a final card to discover what final monstrosity awaits you!

* Memorable Encounters *

Over 200 individual encounters with multiple outcomes – survive enemy encounters and find loot and allies to help you on your adventure.

* Includes… *

Character sheets to pause and play your game, additional loot tables, and additional combat encounters to vary your adventure as much as you wish.

ACES Questions. If you draw an ace, keep this in your inventory and use it at any point to avoid an encounter.

Is this at any point in the game? ie: Encounter, Combat, Damage, Defense & Healing

Hi Michael,

Absolutely - if at any point you draw an ACE you can keep this in your inventory to skip an encounter. Just remember to discard it once used instead of returning it to the Deck.

Thank you very much for clarifying. I have two more questions, if you don't mind. When testing against intelligence or strength, do aces also count as a 10? When resting, what ability gets replenished? I know HP goes up, but what other ability?

Hi Michael,

Apologies - we didn't receive a notification of your reply. You are correct regarding Aces when healing or ability checks. Throughout each adventure, you may aquire new abilities which may need to be replenished during healing; other stats (STR, DEX etc.) do not recover during rest.

I just watched Solitary RPG's review and love the simplicity of this. He had some recommendations based on some confusion in the rules. Will you be updating this again soon in regard to those suggestions? I want to wait a print the most up to date version. Have you considered offering a printed copy in a nice A5 travel size? I'm really looking forward to diving into this. The cover is killer too!

We have just updated the PDF with some changes to the rules pages for clarity. Our backers on Kickstarter received a physical copy and we have sold out of our remaining paperbacks. We are happy to review this if there was a demand for it! We really hope you enjoy the game!

Hi Richard, I didn't realize you had a KS or a paper ack you had offered. That's cool! I took a look at the KS and saw you also offer some cards. Will those be back up on your site as well? I hope DoD gets lots of interest and I will watch for more paper packs in the future. Cheers!

What's the difference between Hit and Dmg in mob stat blocks? How does combat work when it comes to the character receiving (rather than dealing) damage? Also, the stats for looters are missing.

Hi,

Hit = The modifier added to the card draw. If higher than your DEF then the opponent hits.

Dmg = The amount of HP you lose if the opponent successfully hits.

There's no penalty for your stats being reduced to zero other than you failing many checks and having to be very careful with your encounter choices. That would be a tough run! There are events and encounters which will increase your stats - it depends on the adventure you are running.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
