Downcrawl Encounter Deck

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A crumbling bridge over a river of lava, ancient maps carved deep into every inch of stone. But guarding it, a primal horror of living, angry rock...

The Downcrawl Encounter Deck helps you quickly generate unique and interesting story-based encounters for your game of Downcrawl 2E or any subterranean adventure (as well as providing quick results for Fungal Foraging of interesting mushrooms). Drawing from the Encounter Deck replaces the Travel Encounter and Fungal Foraging moves and tables in Downcrawl, making it quick and easy to generate random surprises during a journey.

The Encounter Deck cards fit together like jigsaw pieces to assemble a spontaneous encounter. Here's how it works:

  • Your first draw gives you an encounter type (ChallengeThreatOpportunity, or Location).
Four Downcrawl encounter types
  • Each Encounter type has its own instructions for drawing more cards to form a dynamic encounter.
    • For instance, a Challenge encounter combines a Situation with a Threat and Opportunity, representing the risk and reward of engaging.
    • In the Challenge draw shown below, the party encounters an old man trapped in a deep pit: if he can be rescued, he might provide valuable directions to your destination (an Opportunity for Tack, Downcrawl's navigational resource), but the dangerous terrain around the pit will make rescuing him harder (a Threat of damage).
Example Challenge.

Encounters get riskier as your Danger level rises during travel. Encounter cards with a red skull instruct you to worsen your draw in various ways if your Danger level has reached the given threshold.

Threats also show Portents, letting you use the Encounter Deck along with Downcrawl's Add a Danger move. The GM (or one player) can draw a card, read only the Portent aloud and keep the card until the Threat is revealed.

Finally, the Encounter Deck can also replace Fungal Foraging rolls from Downcrawl. Draw three cards and line up the purple fungal growths to assemble them into your find: a Primary Effect, name, and Side Effect, as in these "shadow stinkhorns":

Fungal Foraging results from the Encounter Deck.

The Encounter Deck has been carefully designed to squeeze inspiration into every inch of each card, while still keeping font sizes legible for easy reading. Lines and color-coding help you align the recombinable cards properly. The Deck contains 36 premium tarot-sized cards with hundreds of total prompts, including over two hundred memorable possible Situations from the tables in the Downcrawl book:

  • Ancient battlefield, thousands of skeletons
  • Opulent funicular, donation box, twenty-minute ride, windows painted black
  • Hunter stalking a fearsome predator, possibly imaginary
  • Gear-room of an enormous clock keeping an unfamiliar time
  • Competing ferry boats crossing a foul-smelling river
  • Ancient coliseum, massive but long-ruined
  • Happy family of four living in large glass terrarium; beg you not to break the seal or the Tallmarm will be angry
  • Floor coated with purple ichor, effects unknown
  • Fifty-foot gap in the path with a hazard in between
  • ...and many more

For the ultimate Downcrawl experience, the Encounter Deck is a great add-on to any campaign.

  • The Encounter Deck helps you generate random mushrooms and travel encounters for Downcrawl (or any underworld adventure). Simply draw a card and follow the instructions for that card type to assemble an encounter out of further card draws.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
