Gunslingers and Gamblers
by Steve C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/20/2006 00:00:00

Back in the Saddle: The Return of the Western RPG

?Gunslinger? joins a growing community of ?pure? western RPGs. While certainly not a ?history lesson with dice?, the game pays close attention to both the well-known tropes of the genre and the peculiarities and uniqueness of the historical context. In a true sense, this thoroughly is a complete western game and not simply a system grafted to a ?googled? together.

The slick system mechanic uses ?traits rolls? resolved with standard poker dice and chips. Here characters may be rolling against a static difficulty or a livelier opposed roll. More abstract than ?number crunching?, the mechanic is fresh and supports the flow story over endless bookkeeping.

Characters tend to be themed and specialized while still being capable of functioning within the larger game context. Importantly the combat system is flexible enough to represent both standard gunplay and the ?shoot-out? so central to the genre. A skilled gunfighter can end combat quickly yet the mechanic works well in balancing lethality with playability.

Rules aside, the bulk of the book provides GMs and players with the material to run solid old west game. From regional to local (Harris County Wyoming), the books supplies instantly playable locales. Other chapters cover environment, equipment, character interaction and the obligatory introductory adventure.

The strength of ?Gunslinger? is the playability and the completeness of the product. If you crave a ?purer? old west experience, get this game. If you preferred ?Tombstone? to ?Wild Wild West?, get this game. If the rage-inducing truncations (?fighting?, playin?, annoyin?) in most other western games made you buck like a bronco, get this game. It?ll be your huckleberry.

Privateers and Pirates

"If you buy only one Pirate rpg this year!". But seriously, I'm very pleased with Pirates & Privateers. Its the first Pirate rpg I've looked at that I thought "I'd could run this straightaway without modifying anything". The mechanics are neat & quick, the background information is excellent and pertinent to actually playing games. Yes, it tends towards a 'grittier" style of play, but has the provision for Drama Points, which could easily be used to make a more cinematic game. Highly recommended.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

Privateers and Pirates

RPing Under the Banner of King Death

An solid system that stresses 'realism' over swinging from the chandelier. Characters have a few things they are good at (remember what was good about Traveller?) so you tend to have fewer skills and specialities. Result?: this is a great game for 'Troupe Style' play.

Mechanics are based on a 'roll over the target number' (roll % dice) system. Combat is interesting in that it can be quick and deadly while at other times there is the back and forth of swordplay. An interesting damage system that makes you respect weapons and think twice about doing the math that lets a 2nd level PC always take the first sword hit without worry. Oh, and don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

No magic, supernatural or talking parrots, thank goodness. Also, the author's passion for the subject is evident. 'Privateers and Pirates' doesn't shackle you to the Spanish Main. Barbary pirates, got it. Zanzibar, ditto. Piracy in various eras is also covered.

If you are interested in genre, be it realistic or Disney-esque, buy this game. It's hard enough to find RPGs grounded in some kind of fact, so let's support one when it comes along. You'll thank me...pirate's honour.

I feel Biplane Barmy is simple, elegant system and rule is on the whole clear. But there is some questions.

1)Alt +1 Maneuver at Altitude 6 Can the "Climb" or "Immelman" be selected at Altitude 6?

2)Infantry Rules I can't find Infantry Rule( at 2.9 "Anti-Aircraft Fire").

_6.4 Determine Units _If one side has less planes than the other they _may take One additional plane OR Four AA _weapons (Flak Guns, Machine Guns or Infantry)

Ship of the Line
by Chris C. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 09/27/2005 00:00:00

First thing to keep clear is this is a board game, not an RPG. With that in mind, this is a gorgeous, elegant game. The rules, while not perfect, are efficient, well written, and clear. It's brimming with historical content, naval terminology, and just plain fun.

I cannot recommend this game enough. The author has filled it with historical naval artwork depicting many major engagements of the Napoleonic era.

If this were a boxed game, it would probably run for $25 minimum.<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: The historical content, the game mechanics, the authentic feel. Hi Chris, Thanks for your comments, all feedback is appreciated and I'm glad you liked it. If you go over to my website (www.fjgaming.com) you'll find some variant rules for ship of the line, submitted by other customers, which may address some of the rules issues (they include conversion rules to play the game on an octagonal grid, submitted by Pete Jones).

There are several really great comments from others about this game, so I'll be brief...

This is a really great, simple game. Of particular interest to me was how quickly and easily my son learned the rules. He and I often play other games, but this one was easy for him to learn.

A REVIEW OF ?SHIP OF THE LINE? FROM FAT JONNY GAMES

This is the fourth download-and-print PDF game I've bought from Fat Jonny Games, and I've been pleased with all of them. They are simple beer 'n' pretzels games, and they include everything you need except dice (and you'll need a bunch of dice for this particular game).

Games of Naval Warfare in the Age of Sail are full of atmosphere. Most of them are fairly complex (Wooden Ships & Iron Men, for example), and take a fair amount of time to play. "Ship of the Line" (referred to hereafter as "SOTL") has taken the general idea of these games and integrated some game mechanics from FJG?s previous releases to make a fast-playing, fun game of naval combat. He has simplified the mechanics and record-keeping of the typical Age of Sail game and made it operate at a easier to play, faster pace. Gobs of flavor, quick to learn (or teach) and play. It?s getting harder to get the time or opponents for the old standard Grognard-style games of the Avalon Hill Era, so this is a great way to introduce a new player to naval wargaming, or to get a bunch of the guys together for a lot of shouting and a desire for a rematch.

With FTG?s simultaneous movement mechanic (represented by a 20-sided die displaying the current maneuver selected from a list of twenty) you get the fog-of-war aspect that makes this a real face-to-face game.

WHAT YOU GET: Basic Rules Advanced Rules Optional Rules Campaign Rules Random Scenario Generator Ship and Island Counters Playing Map Grid Glossary of Period Naval Terms

WHAT YOU DON?T GET BUT YOU NEED: D20 for every ship in the combat. D6?s...a bunch of them. Card stock to print out the playing pieces and map.

WHAT YOU DON?T GET BUT YOU MIGHT LIKE: Ship status card. You could easily design one to print out.

IS IT A GOOD BARGAIN? Absolutely

IS IT FUN? Yep.

WOULD I BUY AN EXPANSION FOR THIS? Almost certainly, sight unseen.

<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: Simple system. Quick set-up. Fast play. Fog of war...reminiscent of Ace of Aces.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: Unnecessary duplication of maps in the downloaded PDF.
You can just print out the same page several times, if you need multiple copies.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

I just finished the download, and have yet to do more than skim, but so far I am very happy. Just what I like in a game, simple and easy to teach! Plan to use it at cons. Already making plans to use miniatures. I am thinking a "1 always misses" rule on cannons will help the action, but other than that, I like what I see.

Keep up the good work. <br><br><b>LIKED</b>: I like the movement system. Makes for nice play without a lot of records.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: Needs a "1s always miss" rule :), but then again perhaps I missed it. <br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

Excellent value for money this is an extension of the system used in the Biplane Barmy rules.

In my humble opinion I feel that it is better suited to the Napoleonic Naval period than the WWI aerial period.

The game is played on a square gridded tabletop. Each ship has a choice of up to 20 movement options (depending on ship type and wind direction). As ships are hit the number of movement options decrease.

Combat is by use of rolling a number of D6 which represents the ships firepower. Roll greater than the range to hit and damage is taken from the movement options or the number of dice used for firepower.

The rules are ideal for multiplayer games or at conventions.

If you are looking for naval simulation forget them but if you are looking for a little fun on a gaming night these are value for money. They come with numerous cardboard stand up ships which you can use if you don't own any metal ones. A cheap way to try the period.

Again some people may think that use of a square gridded board instead of a hex gridded board is not so good. Maybe but these are a beer and pretzel type game.

<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: Well produced nice artwork.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: No complaints<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Excellent<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

Thanks for the review Pete, first and foremost, glad you enjoyed it. I've mainly gone for squares because it cuts down the effective number of maneuvers to 20, which fits the idea of using a d20 for each ships maneuver dice. Using a hex grid significantly increases the number of possible movement options, which does add something to the game, but gets away from the d20 :)

These are a nice set of simple WW1 aerial combat rules and excellent value for money. They may be too simplistic for some people but with a little tweaking it can make the rules more interesting.

For instance in our group the first hit on a manoeuvre instead of striking it off completely a single line is placed through it. The next time that manoeuvre is hit a second line in the oppososite direction is placed through it. On a third hit the plane is lost. Once the first line is placed through it the manoeuvre cannot be chosen. This makes planes last a little longer!

I know on other forums people have complained that a squared board is used instead of a hex system. Yes it may make less manoeuvres available but those people are missing the point this is a simple game. <br><br><b>LIKED</b>: Nice and simple, clear rules. Well worth the price.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: All planes have the same movement options. I have already created different movement patterns depending on plane type. For example the Sopwith CAmel cannot use 10,11 and 14 as the camel could make good left turns. However, they are still crossed off for damage purposes.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

With Ship of the Line, FJG has produced the ultimate expression of its square dice maneuver system. Very similar to the previous products (Blazing Jets and Barmy Biplanes), Ship of the Line is more suited to the game system than aircraft. I wouldn't have thought that Napoleonic era naval combat could be expressed so easily, but this game does it quite well.

FJG has also provided a large amount of background material that will satisfy the student of the period as well as informing the neophyte. With only a few minutes of preparation, I had a three-ship battle in progress with multiple exchanges of broadsides. This game was played with a juvenile who had little trouble understanding how the game worked with only a short explanation.

Bravo, FJG. Extremely well done!<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Excellent<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

DISCLAIMER: Please note that The Le Games purchased this product for a freelancer as payment. This is technically his review. The Le Games is not affiliated with this product or it's publishers in any way.

REVIEW: There is always a place for games which are simple, complete and based on an interesting subject. With Blazing Jets, FJGaming brings these ideas to the combat between NATO and Warsaw Pact air forces, providing a game which is quick and enjoyable. The download comes complete with all necessary maps, counters, charts and statistics. The basic game uses one or two aircraft per side which manoeuvre on a square grid map within a small number of height bands. In other words, the planes very quickly move into range of each other and then use tactics to shoot down the opposition without offering a target in return. Advanced rules include such complications as airstrips, aircraft carriers, helicopters and civilian craft. These are all handled sensibly and will not slow down the game unnecessarily. Above all, the game focuses on the actions of the fighter planes themselves and this makes sure the pace is maintained ? the scale is such that ground units do not move at all and exist mostly as targets to shoot at ? great fun!

The manoeuvres that planes can undertake are at the heart of the system and 20 are listed. As has been seen in other games, including FJGaming?s own Barmy Biplanes, the starting square and orientation and the ending square and orientation are clearly shown and it is easy for planes to move simultaneously. It is also very easy to play the game solitaire just by rolling a dice for which manoeuvre the enemy plane or planes conduct. Additional suggestions provide ways of expanding the action to the Gulf War and Vietnam War and it would not be difficult to expand to other possible actions. A space combat game would also be possible with these rules.

All in all, this is an excellent bargain and a fine game which, while seeming to cover most of the complexities of aerial warfare in the 1970s-90s, does not over-complicate the issue. It will suit anyone games player looking for a short and fun effort at shooting other players out of the sky. Those who are experts in modern aeronautics and who would prefer more complexity can probably add their own to this basic game engine.

I was really looking forward to this ruleset after purchasing Biplane Barmy.

I am glad it has been placed in the board game section where it really makes a mark as an excellent product. it definately is more of a board game than a wargame. Blazing Jets includes basic rules to get you straight into the game but there are heaps of advanced rules too.

The Author has put a lot of extra features into the rules that make this more than just a time filler. Although the rules are meant to use generic aircraft, I believe there is a lot of scope for a more realistic approach to the game.

I would definately recommend this product.<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: The game is quick and easy but still fun with simple recordkeeping.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: There really isn't anything wrong with this product.
