Fighter Archetype: Gladiator (5e)

Suggested Price $0.50

A new fighter archetype for those seeking to play a warrior both stoic and spectacular. The gladiator survives in light armor, practicing highly specialized fighting styles and using critical blows to inspire their allies and demoralize their enemies.

Note: this interpretation of the gladiator (and the choices of which fighting styles to provide) is derived from the gladiatorial aesthetic of the STARZ Spartacus tv series, more than absolute historical accuracy.

I would really appreciate any and all feedback, as I want to make this archetype as balanced and interesting as possible.

Change Log

1) Modified Persistent Endurance to provide in-combat benefit similar to Relentless Endurance (as half-orc); adjusted some flavor text.

2) Modified Light Armor Mastery to provide a +1 bonus to AC instead of +2. Removed the quick exhaustion recovery component from Persistent Endurance. Removed the exhaustion effect from Adrenaline Surge. Adjusted background colors.

3) Removed Tunnel Fighter as one of the prerequisite options for the Retiarius Gladiatorial Fighting Style. Removed unnecessary clarification from the Retiarius Gladiatorial Fighting style. Replaced Improved Magnificent Blow with Spectacular Superiority.

This is really nice work and I'll likely incorporate some version of the archetype into my game. Constructive feedback:

1) The fighter's 7th level feature is supposed to be a ribbon. Example: a Samurai gets a bonus to a charisma check. So causing fright is super-cool and also on-point, but is a little inconsistent with the class design.

2) Gladiatorial fighting style: I absolutely love Murmillo. Flavor + good use of reaction + well balanced == 10/10 will play. It seems like waiting until 10th level for a career-defining play style is too long to wait. What about moving gladiatorial fighting style to 3rd? Persistent fortitude could move to 10th, which is somewhat analogous to Samurai unbreakable will.

Just my two cents. Again, really nice work.

persistent fortitude talks about sleeping to gain the benefit of a long rest, but you don't need to sleep at all to gain the benefits of a long rest.

also 5e doesn't differentiate between hands, so there's no such thing as main hand or off hand

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
