Lost Ship: A Survival Game

A great game once you get the sequence of play down. A previous review compared it to Batllestar Galactica, but I see a Kobayashi-maru similarity with an option for a win. Eight leaps and they found a home. I barely had enough fuel. Was not able to find many fuel replenishments and was on my least leap when home was a found. For me, I had to pay attention to the recording of information. It is easy to forget to mark something when you get involved. Lost all my pilots in the last two rounds. I will try writing a log to make the game more narritive and see what story can come about.

Violent Skies - 1940 - Dynamo to the Blitz

Violent Skies is a fun simple air combat game. A game can be played in under 30 minutes and each game played can be combined into a campaign to see how your pilot(s) fair a long game. In my first game my pilot shot down one bandit and then was killed by the next one. Its nice that we can play boths sides (Allies and Axis) of the fight too.

My one recommendation is to make the aircraft sheets more printer friendly (lighter colors instead of dark greys and black) and larger aircraft sheets for older eyes. I had to bring out the magnifying glass to read some detail.

This game will be on my desk for awhile.

A challenging game for only eight cards and a four by four grid. My fist game was a total loss four squares in with more enemy forces than missles. Shot down over the target. Second game was a walk through the park. Entered one side of the board and exited the other side with no damage. The board arrangement is never the same due to the eight cards and the rotation of the card when designing the playing field. The rules are easy to understand, and you can be playing in minutes. I can see a co-operative game between two players attacking the target and then clearing the board. Pocket Apache has earned its spot on the desk as a go to game for a quit gaming fix.

SM79 Damned Hunchback PDF

SM79 Damned Hunchback is a card game of low complexity. There are only a few rules to learn, and you can be playing a game in minutes of reading them. A game/mission takes a minute or two to complete, but the game is additctive. You will want to start another game/mission to try and get that torpedo hit after the last mission missed its target.

You're at the mercy of the shuffle of the deck, but knowing when to release the torpedo is key. You are not always gaurenteed a hit even when you make it to the target.I could see playing this game and tracking a group of aircraft attacking a target and seeing how many hits are scored.

The rules could use some clarity being that there are only a few rules. The cursive text on the "Damages" card is a bit hard to read for my eye sight. I could see combining the "Distance" and "Damages" cards into a single card and using a couple of tokens to track the respected values, but the two cards as is allows you to have a tokenless game to play.

A very challenging game for a single page microgame. I ran four patrols, and I was only able to finish one patrol with my ship intack. The rules are simple to learn, but you will need to strategize on when to fight and when to run. If you can run. On some patrols you wish you had a few more missles.

One thing I'd recommend is letting your shield take hits to save missiles when possible, even sometimes taking hull damage is advantages. You can often utilize focused fire to defeat an enemy while the rest ping your shields. That damage will be ignored after the end of combat. I try to save my missiles for carriers or the occasional wave of bombers. The missiles are powerful and tend to be a last choice for my patrols. But sometimes the dice are unforgiving and patrols can throw too much at you. Worst case, you can try taking a couple of the upgrades from the campaign to start with more.

Table Air Combat: Flight Operations Manual

I came across TAC while looking for another game, and I am glad I purchased TAC. The rules are simple, and the game requires strategy to win. Each aircraft template card contains all the information you will need for the aircraft. Knowing what your aircraft can do and how to respond with your aircraft is key to winning. I started with the F4U Corsair and the Japanese "Zero" and have enjoyed dualing these two on the dinning room table.

Running through the rules solo I used a basic initiative system of a D6 for each side, and the lower roll went last.

I look forward to building out the pacific theatre soon.
