The Minipeople Roleplaying Game

This is a two page, 8.5" x 11" (portrait orientation), two column PDF with color art. The art is amateurish cartoons (though better than I could draw!), but this game is obviously a labor of love and the author is only asking "Pay What You Want" for it. The setting seems inspired by the books and Anime "The Borrowers" by Mary Norton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Borrowers), i.e. tiny little people who live in the walls or beneath the floor of a house full of humans. They use found objects like sewing needles as swords and thread spools as dinner tables. For what it's worth, this was one of my favorite books to read when I was young.

There are five Stats: Strength, Agility, Wits, Perception, and Charm. They each range from 1 to 5, as assigned by the player from a pool of 12. There is a short list of skills, but more can be added as needed, "any other skills you can invent." The player rolls for equipment value, and there is a small table with some common equipment and it's value, such as bow, arrows, sword. The list also has items like biplane, airship, and tin foil shield. Again, like the books, there is almost a steam-punk feel to the ingenious ways the "minipeople" borrow and build what they need.

Task resolution is 1d6 + Stat and try to beat a 7, with relevant skills allowing a reroll (keep the higher result). There are rules to cover different kinds of attacks, cover, opposed rolls, being caught unaware, etc. There is a simple experience point system and rules for character advancement. There is a bestiary with 'beasts' like Human, Cat, Ant, Mosquito, and Wasp. There are three example Minipeople NPC's, a few notes on cities, transportation, regular diet, and even an enemy group of "Rogue Minipeople" named the Regudai.

This is a very simple, straightforward system with the outline of a setting. It seems pretty workable as is, but if you'd prefer to use a system you're more familiar with, that wouldn't be a problem. This is an excellent first effort, covers most of what an RPG needs in just two pages, and doesn't get preachy or esoteric as some other labors-of-love tend to be.

I was interested because of my fond memories of reading "The Borrowers," but that's not really what this game is about. It has similarities, sure, but there is a lot more focus in Minipeople on combat, including intra-clan conflict. To be fair to the author, they never explicitly state that "The Borrowers" were an inspiration, that's baggage I brought along. In the end, it feels more like "The Borrowers" meets OGL meets steam-punk.

Hi Stephen! Thanks for the great review. I have heard of \"the Borrowers,\" though I didn\'t read it as a child. This was more something I wrote about as a kid. It would be absolutely cool to import this to other systems, such as GURPS. Certainly it would provide more chance for expansion. One thing I will point out, is that the 1d6 + stat v.s. 7 system means that even with a stat of 5, you can fail on a roll of 1, and even with a stat of 1, you can succeed on a roll of 6. I considered a Dungeon World-like mechanic but I think enough people have used that one by now. Anyway, glad you enjoyed, and if there\'s anything you would like to see in the future, I could certainly consider adding a supplement. For now I will be focusing on other RPG projects, soon to come! Thanks again!
