Great one-off, straight forward and easy to run. The setting is made with flexibility and the big (little) bad is a unique character. I got a bit choked up with the group returning to the village after quest and reporting back. I'll keep an eye out for other creations by the author!

"The most creepy character we ever met" - after about 400 hours of play the Sculptor stood out more than any other villian to my players.

very engaging, new to DND 5e, thought this module was well written with interesting characters, plot and encounters. Well balanced for 6 member party composed of 3rd and 4th level characters.

A decent oneshot adventure. The Carver's Cave has an original villain, who is really difficult to predict. Mostly in this kind of scenarios, where people from the small village keep missing, we are dealing with some kind of horrific, dark monster... and we have it there, kind of. The main villain is a humanoid, a halfling, who dresses and claims to be a normal artist. But then things start to get messy. Overall the strongest advantage of this module is The Carver - the character is original, fun to roleplay and absolutely thrilling to implement in the game. The worst part is the beginning and ending. It's nearly undefined. We got some lore in the beginning and some stuff at the end, but without any revelation. The Carvers Cave needs a little bit more love from the DM to make it super fun - this adventure needs polishing. Overall, this module is great if you are willing to add something of yours to this. For example, I killed one of my players during the fight with the Carver and my players made the reverse ritual to revive him, but he was revived in a different body, because his original one was torn to pieces. I used the lost sheriff body, which added a lot more flavor to the plot.

Summary:

  • great, original villain
  • good encounter balancing
  • great quality maps
  • encounter level-scaling instruction
  • pleasantly made pdf
  • flat plot
  • weak storytelling

This was a fun adventure, well-produced, and I liked how the source of the problem wasn't something obvious (like a basilisk), but actually something more unique and interesting.

The meat of the adventure takes place in the Carver's Cave, with a short intro in the nearby town, and an encounter with bear cubs that reveals some clues. This all worked very well; my one gripe with the adventure is that the "search the wilderness" portion of it really lacks any interesting decisions for the players to make. The players attempt to follow some tracks, and if they fail, the DM solves the problem for the players by providing the clue-giving bear encounter, or having the carver light a fire at night. There's nothing for the players to do here, aside from generate a random number (i.e. roll Survival). In order for the tracking portion of the adventure to be worth something, it needs to be fleshed out with interesting decisions for the players to make.

This is a fantastic adventure. Its setup is simple and easy to run without a ton of prep (I had about 1.5 days' notice before our session and it still went smoothly). The design is smooth, with lots of skill checks for varying classes, different ways to investigate, and a truly fantastic villain. Because there was just enough information, I was able to adapt the story to player choices easily. The final combat drained them of all health and resources, so they'll need to rest and come back, giving the baddie a chance to escape and leading to a hunt! This is just so fun. With the author's permission, I'd love to publish and link to a session summary on my blog of how my players ran through the majority of the adventure (with my own touches, of course). Let me know. Cheers to this adventure! It is worth more than it costs! Run it and enjoy the cat and mouse game in the cave. The players did not know whether to trust the villain or not and were constantly questioning themselves - not an easy feat for a DM! With the right setup (which this adventure provides) I pulled it off!

I adapted this as a one-shot during the Phandelver campaign (or rather afterward as I was transitioning to a new campaign). One night not all of my players could show up and there wa ssignificant down time that could be played out. I made the following adaptations to th story to make it fit:

  1. Some townsfolks of Phandalin are still missing or unaccounted for even after the scrurge of the Cragmaw Clan has been eliminated.
  2. Aloyisious Tagget, brother of Alistair Tagget and representative of the Order of the Gauntlet was sent for by Darren Edermath to help establish a new governing body in Phandalin.
  3. Alistair Tagget served as the lawmaster in Phandalin before the Cragmaw and Redbrand showed up. Weeks before the Redbrands moved in on the town, Alistair went missing while investigated orc sitings in the foothills of the Sword mountains long the Triboar Trail.
  4. Aloyisious offers a reward to selected party members to investigate and see if they can account for any townsfolk still missing and to keep an eye out for his brother, Alistair.

I then changed the location of the Carver's Cave to a crag high up in the foothills of the Sword Mountains. Part two then plays out as written.

I ran this adventure, and my group had a blast. It was quite amusing to listen to the party trying to figure out what was causing the disapearances. None came close. A few suggestions for running this game. Flesh out the town a bit more, I had them meet a tired and grumpy Mayor, which got them thinking about Werewolves, which wasn't my intention, I just felt that the Mayor would be stressed out because of the disappearances, which would mean he wasn't sleeping well. Also the Carver is listed as CR 2 but I ran this on roll20 and to get the bonuses to work on the sheet I had for him, I had to bump him to CR 5. I ran this for 5 level 3 characters, and the final encounter was probably close to being deadly, (they did get knocked out).
