Scion Companion Part One: Tuatha (Scion)

Given the number of gamers in my area who are fascinated by the Celts, the Celtic Pantheon was a very welcome addition to Scion. The rules are clear, the roles (and rivalries) of the various gods and goddesses are well done. The additional Enech rules help make the pantheon unique. Gifts and Geasa are also help make the irish pantheon character fun. And they are not something to take lightly!

As usual in a White Wolf game, substance takes second place to artwork and artsy layout. Book length could have been halved by avoiding massive decorative borders. It could have been made easier to read by sticking with plainer pages.

The technical criticism aside, this book is a "must have" for a scion player who is interested in expanding their game from the basic 6 pantheons. The Celtic pantheon is immensely popular with gamers, and this book will expand your game considerably. My only real complaint, aside from the usual layout issues, is the bok would have benefited from more monsters and creatures from the mythos.

Some what a good expansion to the original patheons just wish there was more explanation on how they could fit into the already made story line.

This is a nicely polished piece of work and does what it says on the tin. It provides you with the new pantheon, updates to powers and purviews, legacies and all the rest of it you could want in reference to the Tuatha Dé Danann, the Celtic pantheon.

The main rules addition is the notion of the ‘Geas’, a ban or pledge made by a scion of the pantheon which lends them power and a boost in ‘fate’ so long as they keep to the rules. Stray outside them and fate has a piss-fit, weakening you, keep to them and you remain strong. This is a great addition and very much in keeping with the Celtic myth.

I'm not sure why I'm being asked to write this now, seeing as I haven't been able to download the product yet.

I loved this section of the companion. I have already made a Scion of Lugh as an NPC in my game, and I love him!

This is, as a whole, a pretty good addition to the Scion series. There are, however, bits and pieces that just feel wrong. The Titan covered in this book, Crom Cruach, for example, doesn't feel very interesting. The cosmology of the books is also a bit thin as well.

My big issue with it, though, is actually quite simple- the characters. I actually AM Irish, so when I say neither rings true, it's probably not a good sign.

Otherwise, though, it's quite a good buy, and entirely worth it's admittedly-quite-low price.

Having studied Irish lore, I had high hopes for this book. It is not a disappointment. Not only are the write-ups for the gods done well, but the history and narratives are excellent also. But, the best part of the book is the Geases that you can lay down for your character (and others), they offer very interesting avenues to flesh out your character and give a you and your ST great chances for challenging role playing. The Pantheon Boons are very well done as well with the last few being very very sick. All in all a very good start, and I hope the rest of the installments will be just as well done.
